Stripe
Stripe is an American financial technology company founded in 2010. It provides payment processing, billing, payouts and embedded financial products that many neobanks and marketplaces rely on as infrastructure rather than as a consumer bank brand.1
History
Founded by Patrick and John Collison, Stripe grew by making card acceptance and online checkout simple for developers. It expanded into global payments, treasury, issuing and capital products for platforms.
Founders
Patrick Collison is co-founder and chief executive officer of Stripe. Born in Ireland, he co-founded Stripe in 2010 with his brother John after earlier teenage entrepreneurship (including auction software Croma). Patrick has led Stripe's expansion from developer-friendly card payments into a global financial infrastructure platform spanning Billing, Connect, Issuing, Treasury and capital products used by internet businesses and many fintechs.
John Collison is co-founder and president of Stripe. Together the Collison brothers—often cited among Europe's most successful technology emigrés to Silicon Valley—built Stripe into one of the world's most valuable private financial technology companies by obsessing over API quality and reducing the friction of accepting payments online.
Role in the neobank stack
Stripe rarely competes as a consumer neobank; instead it supplies payments, issuing, treasury and capital APIs that marketplaces and fintechs embed. Many digital banks and wallets rely on similar infrastructure layers for cards and money movement.
Products
Products include Payments, Billing, Connect (marketplace payouts), Issuing, Treasury and related APIs. Stripe partners with banks for regulated money movement and does not market itself as a retail neobank.
