PayPal

History

PayPal emerged from the early internet payments boom, was acquired by eBay, later spun out, and expanded through acquisitions including Venmo and Braintree. It remains one of the most widely held digital wallets.

Founders

PayPal emerged from the 2000 merger of Confinity and X.com, creating one of the defining digital-payments companies.

Max Levchin co-founded Confinity and served as PayPal's early chief technology officer, building fraud systems that made email payments viable at scale. Peter Thiel co-founded Confinity, became PayPal's CEO, and later a prominent investor. Luke Nosek and Ken Howery were Confinity co-founders who helped shape early product and finance.

Elon Musk founded X.com, the online bank that merged with Confinity; after the combination, the unified company rebranded as PayPal and was acquired by eBay in 2002. Alumni of this founding group—the so-called PayPal Mafia—went on to start or fund many major technology companies. Today PayPal remains a global wallet and checkout network with consumer balances, debit products and Venmo adjacent to neobank experiences.
